Background of the study
Phonetic variation in speech often reflects the influence of age, as linguistic habits evolve over time. Among Fulani speakers in Adamawa, noticeable differences in pronunciation exist between older and younger generations. These variations may stem from changes in speech habits, language contact, and shifts in cultural practices (Bello, 2023). By examining aspects such as vowel quality, consonant articulation, and prosody, this study aims to document age-related phonetic differences in Fulani speech. Acoustic analysis techniques facilitate the precise measurement of these variations, offering insights into how social and developmental factors contribute to phonetic evolution (Ibrahim, 2024). Understanding these changes is crucial for language preservation and for tailoring educational methods to diverse age groups. The study further investigates how modern influences and migration patterns affect phonetic variation, providing a comprehensive picture of linguistic change among Fulani speakers (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the significance of age as a factor in phonetic variation, there is limited empirical research on how speech patterns differ among Fulani speakers in Adamawa. Variations due to age can impact language transmission and communication clarity, yet systematic documentation is scarce (Adebayo, 2023). This gap in the literature hinders the development of effective language teaching and preservation strategies. Addressing this problem is essential for understanding the evolution of Fulani phonetics and for creating instructional materials that accommodate age-related differences in speech.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it explores how age affects phonetic variation among Fulani speakers, offering insights critical to sociophonetics and language preservation. The findings will inform educators and linguists in developing age-sensitive teaching methods and preservation strategies, ensuring effective communication across generations (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining age-related phonetic variation among Fulani speakers in Adamawa, focusing on acoustic analyses and demographic comparisons.
